Vacation Employment Program 2013/14

Introduction

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) Vacation Employment Program (VEP) provides university students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience to complement their studies in a Department that has a unique role in providing advice and support to the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

PM&C looks for enthusiastic students who:

  • have completed at least their first year of study;
  • have obtained at least a credit average across all or completed subjects;
  • are an Australian citizen; and,
  • are able to obtain a national security clearance at the minimum baseline level.

Program specifics

Students will undertake a specific project or task assigned by a division and be managed and supervised by an experienced officer within PM&C. This provides the opportunity for students to use their skills and knowledge and actively contribute to PM&C’s business requirements. It also means that this project based approach will ensure that students have meaningful work which will provide them with an invaluable experience and exposure to portfolio related issues.

All positions will be based in Canberra. Important: successful applicants who do not reside in Canberra will be responsible for covering all costs related to relocation and accommodation for the duration of the program.

Position duties

Under general direction, the successful candidates may:

  1. Undertake activities/projects as assigned. These activities may include:
    • research assignments;
    • project work on policy development;
    • project or case management; and,
    • preparing briefing material, submissions and reports.
  2. Perform the full range of administrative tasks associated with activities.
  3. Contribute to overall planning and team activities.
  4. Additional duties as required.

Successful applicants will be employed as non-ongoing employees at the APS 2 level for a period of 10 weeks. Commencing salary will be $48, 829 per annum plus a 20% loading in lieu of leave and public holidays.

The program will commence on Monday, 25 November 2013 and will conclude on Friday, 7 February 2014.

Students do not require any previous experience. Once selected, students will be provided with all the training and experience they will need to successfully complete the Vacation Employment Program and gain a valuable insight into the workings of Government.
