- familiarise yourself with the relevant Job Description and Selection Criteria (which you will find on the Current Opportunities page), and
- speak to the contact officer.
Hearing or Speech Impairment
If you are hearing or speech-impaired, you may wish to use the Department's TTY facility on (02) 6271 5610 to obtain further information.
Eligibility to Apply
To be eligible for engagement, applicants must be Australian citizens.
There are also restrictions on the employment of people who have recently accepted a redundancy benefit from an APS Agency or a non-APS Commonwealth employer within the previous 12 months. This includes any payment as a result of the shortening of a retention period or payment made to an SES employee under Section 37 of the Public Service ACT 1999 from an APS Agency or non-APS Commonwealth employer.
TopSecurity Requirements
All PM&C staff require a security clearance of at least ‘Protected’. A higher level of clearance may be required for certain positions or areas of the Department. To be eligible for such a clearance, you must be an Australian citizen.
Applicants must be able to provide detailed personal information covering the past ten years. This may include previous employment, previous addresses, financial information and other details such as overseas travel.
Preparing your Application
Your application should be brief and address the selection criteria. A selection decision may be based solely on your written application and referee reports, and it is the quality, rather than the quantity that is the most critical factor.
You are encouraged to:
- address each selection criterion giving key examples and/or achievements
- and attach a brief statement of your employment history
Lodging your Application
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) uses an online e-recruitment system for lodgement of job applications and it is PM&C’s preference to receive all applications on-line.
Applications should be submitted via the online-recruitment system as directed, by the nominated closing date.
If you are unable to submit your application via the on-line e-recruitment system, please contact the Recruitment Team on 02 6271 5133 or email recruitment@pmc.gov.au.
Methods for Selection
The selection method used will vary depending on the circumstances. Interviews are not held in all cases. Selection may be based entirely on application and referee reports.
Referee Reports
If you are asked to supply written referee reports, either at the time of applying or at a later stage in the selection process, you will need to provide your referee with the Referee Report Process Kit which they should use to rate you against each selection criterion. Only provide written referee reports when requested to do so.
Late applications
Generally late applications will not be accepted. If you are not able to lodge a full application by the closing date due to extenuating circumstances, you may discuss your situation with the Contact Officer. If granted an extension you must ensure that a complete application is forwarded by the date agreed with the Contact Officer to be considered for the employment opportunity. Applications not received by the agreed date will not be followed up.
Progress of your application
For information on the progress of your application - see Your Application status. You may ask the Contact Officer at any time about the progress of your application. The Contact Officer’s details can be found on the job documentation.
TopAvailability for Interview
Unless you advise the Contact Officer otherwise, the department will consider you available for interview from the date applications close. Where possible, the Selection Committee will usually give you at least four working days notice of your interview.
Questions about Specific Vacancies
If you have any questions about the job, the functional area in which the employment opportunity exists or your eligibility to apply, the Contact Officer will be able to assist you.
